how it works
To become that parent who who really helps their kids you need 3 things:
Perspective. Good parenting is not a secret club, but there are some basics that really help make it easier to understand what your kid needs. While enhancing your listening, your integrity, and your presence are critical, without a map of what really matters for you and your kid it is easy to get lost. You will save enormous time, energy, and money being connected to the big picture.
Courage. Courage is what it takes to keep trying. Failure is an essential ingredient of success. The journey of getting what you want includes creating bigger and juicer mistakes and having the courage to keep going. You want them to develop these skills, and it will take courage an trust from you to let them create and learn from their experiences. Coaching helps turn failures into learning experiences and makes the whole experience fun, or at least rewarding.
Self-awareness. Understanding and trust in who you are is the foundation that you build your life on. Helping your kid know them self and trust them self will provide them that solid foundation to build their life on. When they have a way to access this foundation, they have a home to come back to. Being connected to the real you makes even the most difficult situations manageable.
While your kid most certainly has had moments of perspective, courage, and self-awareness, in the heat of the moment it is easy to get pulled into the fray. The failed test, poor performance, rejection, or even success can crash your perspective, and many effort without results can erode courage. How do they continue to feel powerful and on their game?
Perspective, courage, and self-awareness all come together in what I call the Real You.
The Real You is one of the key concepts in Launch Your Life. Connecting to the Real You open up these moments of absolute clarity and inspiration about who you are, what you want your life to be, and how you want to feel each day. This is connecting to your inner knowing – your self-awareness. They know that, if what they want is not filtered through what is possible or practical or what they should do or what other want them to do, it would be really amazing.
It is like coming home…check this out:
One client was struggling with completing school. He was in a pattern of not finishing what he started. We first made sure that the basics were covered – keep showing up for classes, get enough sleep, eat healthy, do your work as best as you can, communicate with the teacher, etc. This all helped – and took a lot of courage – but it was not the source of the struggle. It was only as we began to connect to his Real You that the spark for life returned and the struggle all became part of the game called “learning”.
The result? He completed his program. Got a job before he graduated. And he was committed to create a more healthful lifestyle for himself.
